Thank you for contacting me regarding the Agriculture Bill ahead of its return to the House of Commons on Monday and future trade talks.
I shall always do what I can to support British farmers, especially our local farmers in Suffolk.
I believe that all animals deserve to be respected and cared for throughout their lives, and I have received reassurances from Ministers that the Government is committed to ensure that future trade agreements will uphold our country’s high animal welfare and food standards and that these standards will not be watered down in pursuit of any trade deal. I will, however, continue to monitor this issue closely and work with colleagues to ensure that animal welfare and food standards are always protected.
An additional important point to note is that the formation of the Trade and Agriculture Commission earlier this year provided a welcome step forward in ensuring that the needs of British agriculture are fully considered at an early stage as part of the process of negotiating future trade deals.
Please be rest assured that I will always work hard to support the best interests of farmers in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich.
