Our Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has successfully negotiated a good new deal with the European Union that will uphold the referendum result and get Brexit done. Boris’s deal will mean that Britain leaves the European Union, takes back control of our borders, and immediately allows us to begin to negotiate exciting new trade deals with the rest of the world, helping to create new jobs in Suffolk. Now that Boris has agreed a good deal, we should take it, so that we can get Brexit done and move on to talk about the big issues that matter to all of us: investing in our schools and hospitals, putting 20,000 more police on our streets and doing more to tackle climate change.
Unfortunately, a number of MPs in the last Parliament, led by Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party, continue to play politics and do all that they can to ignore the referendum result and to stop Boris from delivering Brexit. Jo Swinson, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has even gone so far as to publicly say that we should revoke the result of the referendum altogether. I believe this is profoundly undemocratic and hope that these MPs reflect upon their behaviour and recognise, as I do, that we have a moral duty to deliver Brexit because a majority of people in Suffolk and a majority of people in our country voted for it.
A small number of people have written to me about having another referendum. I disagree with this. We cannot simply have another referendum because we disagree with the result of the first one, and I say that as someone who voted to remain in 2016. We had a people’s vote in 2016 and leave won. So we must leave. I hope you will understand that a second referendum aimed at overturning the result of the first is something I do not support as I believe it would cause even more division and uncertainty.
Boris Johnson’s Deal, and a vote for the Conservatives in this election, remains the best way to deliver on the 2016 referendum result, end the dither and delay, and ensure that Britain leaves the European Union. I shall continue to support Boris in delivering his Deal and getting Brexit done.
