With first-hand experience as a practising NHS mental health doctor, our local MP, Dr Dan Poulter is backing Just 42’s petition, calling for increased safety measures on the Orwell Bridge.
Sadly, we continue to see a number of worrying incidents in relation to the Orwell Bridge and, of course, any death from the Orwell Bridge is a huge tragedy.
Many acts of self-harm, including attempts of suicide, can be impulsive in nature. Therefore, restricting access to commonly used methods can ultimately result in reductions in overall rates of suicide, as we have seen with the introduction of so-called suicide barriers on the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
What we’ve seen across the country, and closer to home in Suffolk, is that the number of people experiencing mental ill health and distress has increased during the pandemic. Incidents on the Orwell Bridge sadly appear to be increasing and Dr Poulter believes there is a pressing need to look very seriously at reducing or stopping pedestrian access across the bridge. This is why Dr Poulter is backing Just 42’s petition to increase safety measures on the Orwell Bridge in Suffolk. The aim is secure 10,000 signatures, at which point Dr Poulter will raise and present the petition before Parliament.
Just 42 strive to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and children in rural Suffolk. Through their work, they build relationships with children and young people over a number of years through various projects. Through this work, they build confidence, self-esteem, reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and increase employability. They also increase wellbeing and school attendance.
