Following a visit to the area, Dr Dan Poulter, Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, has given his full backing to the residents of Mendham who are calling for action to slow speeding motorists along Withersdale Street.
Residents have been campaigning to reduce the speed of both light and heavy goods vehicles exceeding the speed limit of 30 mph along the B1123, which has led to damaged roadside verges, noise pollution and reduced safety for pedestrians. Roadside furniture including telegraph poles and signs have also been badly damaged at narrow points of the carriageway, where some heavy goods vehicles cannot pass each other without mounting soft roadside verges.
Although a number of measures are being reviewed by Suffolk County Council to mitigate the traffic problems along the road, residents would also like to see additional traffic-calming devices such as flashing road signs put in place at strategic points along Withersdale Street. The introduction of a 20 mph speed limit throughout the built-up part of the village has also been considered, along with the establishment of a Community Speed Watch scheme.
